Applying Social Science in Southern New England

Impact/Purpose:

Environmental managers at the town, state, and federal levels are increasingly interested in using social science methods to inform decision making. Despite this interest, most managers have little to no training in social sciences or when it is appropriate to use different types of methods. The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve is holding a workshop for local and state government and non-government organizations to learn about some basic social science methods and applications. We will be presenting some of our applied social science work as a part of the workshop.

Description:

Social scientists at EPA-ORD-AED conduct a range of different research efforts in southern New England and beyond. This presentation will discuss broadly three of these efforts in terms of their methods and use in the local context. The three projects that we will be discussing are: 1) water quality perceptions, 2) coastal recreation estimates, and 3) program evaluation.
